How to use the bathroom remodel cost calculator
Pick the kind of bathroom at the top. A powder room has a toilet and a sink but no tub or shower. A full bath adds a tub, a shower or both. A primary bath is the larger bathroom off the main bedroom, usually with a double vanity. Choosing a type fills in a typical size, which you can change.
Enter the bathroom’s width and length, wall to wall. Type feet and inches (5’ 6”) or a decimal (5.5), or tap the minus and plus buttons. Then choose a finish level. Budget means stock vanities, ceramic tile and basic fixtures. Mid-range means semi-custom vanities, porcelain tile and better fixtures. High-end means custom cabinetry, stone or handmade tile and premium fittings.
For a full or primary bath, choose what happens to the tub and shower: a new tub or shower base with a surround in the same spot, a tiled walk-in shower, a tub-to-shower conversion, or keep what you have. Then switch the other items on or off: the vanity, toilet, tile floor, a tile wainscot on the walls, faucets and accessories, lighting, the exhaust fan, drywall and paint, demolition and moving the plumbing.
Set where you live. Building costs run lower than average in some areas and higher in others, and the area setting scales every line to match.
The drawing colors each part of the bathroom that is in the project, and the bar under it shows how the money splits between the line items. The table under the total gives a low to high estimate for every item.
Once you have quotes, open Edit the prices and put them in. Reset puts a price back to the typical range. Save the result as an image to bring to a meeting with a contractor.
The rules behind the estimates
Fixtures are priced each, tile by the square foot. A vanity or toilet costs about the same in a small bathroom as in a large one. Tile scales with the floor and wall area, so it is priced per square foot, installed.
The tub or shower is priced as one job. A new tub with a surround reuses the existing drain and walls. A tiled shower needs a waterproof membrane, a sloped floor, tile on every wall and a glass door, which is why it costs two to three times as much. Converting a tub to a shower adds removing the tub and adjusting the drain.
Wall tile is a wainscot. The calculator prices a 4 foot high band of tile on about half the perimeter, the free wall left after the door, vanity, toilet and tub. Tile inside a tiled shower is already part of the shower line.
Lump sums scale with the room type. Faucets and accessories, lighting and paint are priced for a full bath. A powder room gets about 60% of those, and a primary bath about half again as much.
Finish level changes the price, not the quantity. A high-end floor uses the same square footage as a budget one. The tile and the labor to set it cost more.
Assumptions
Prices are typical 2026 US installed ranges, gathered from commonly published cost guides. They include materials and labor, but not permits, design fees or a general contractor’s overhead, which can add 10 to 20%. The area setting is a starting point. Local prices can sit well outside these ranges.
The bathroom is a single rectangular room with sound framing and subfloor. Repairing rot or water damage, a heated floor, a new window, a freestanding tub and structural changes are not included. Raise the relevant price if your plan has them.
Totals are rounded to the nearest $10, or $100 above $10,000, because a remodel estimate is never accurate to the dollar.
Worked example
Say it is a 5 by 8 foot full bath, mid-range finishes, average cost area. The plan is a new vanity, toilet, tub and surround, tile floor, fixtures, lighting, fan, paint and demolition. The floor is 40 square feet.
- Vanity, top and sink: $1,200 to $3,000.
- Toilet: $600 to $1,200.
- New tub and surround: $3,000 to $6,000.
- Floor tile: 40 square feet at $15 to $28 is $600 to $1,120.
- Faucets, mirror and accessories: $900 to $2,500.
- Lighting and electrical: $800 to $2,000.
- Exhaust fan: $400 to $1,000.
- Drywall, paint and trim: $700 to $1,500.
- Demolition and disposal: 40 square feet at $12 to $30 is $480 to $1,200.
The total is $8,680 to $19,500. Swap the tub for a tiled walk-in shower and it becomes $12,700 to $25,500. A 10 by 12 foot primary bath with a double vanity and a tiled shower comes to $17,000 to $35,600, and a 4 by 5 foot powder room to $4,180 to $9,960.
Paying for the project
Many homeowners compare home equity line of credit rates before a bigger bathroom remodel. Having your low and high totals in hand makes it easier to decide how much, if anything, to borrow.

Bathroom Remodel Cost Calculator FAQ
How much does a bathroom remodel cost in 2026?
A mid-range remodel of a 5 x 8 ft full bath with a new vanity, toilet, tub and surround, tile floor, fixtures, lighting, fan and paint runs about $8,680 to $19,500 with typical US prices. A tiled walk-in shower instead of the tub raises it to about $12,700 to $25,500.
How much does a primary bathroom remodel cost?
A 10 x 12 ft primary bath with a double vanity and a tiled shower comes to about $17,000 to $35,600 with mid-range finishes. With high-end finishes the same room runs about $32,300 to $66,000, before moving any plumbing.
What is the most expensive part of a bathroom remodel?
The tub or shower is usually the biggest single line, especially a tiled walk-in shower, which needs waterproofing, a sloped floor, tile work and glass. Moving plumbing is the most expensive optional item, because it can mean opening the floor.
How much does a powder room remodel cost?
A 4 x 5 ft powder room with a new vanity, toilet, tile floor, fixtures, lighting, fan and paint runs about $4,180 to $9,960 at mid-range prices. There is no tub or shower, so it costs far less than a full bath.
Is it cheaper to keep the plumbing in the same place?
Yes. Leaving the toilet, sink and shower drain where they are avoids opening floors and walls, and typically saves $1,500 to $5,000 or more. It is the easiest way to keep a bathroom budget in check.
