How to use the pendant light spacing calculator
Start with the island height. Most islands are counter height, 36 inches. Raised bar tops are about 42 inches.
Then measure the island. Take the countertop’s length from end to end, and its depth from front to back, including any seating overhang. Type the numbers the way you would write them (8’ or 96”) or tap the minus and plus buttons. Add the ceiling height. The unit toggle switches to centimeters.
Next, pick a shade diameter. Each button shows how many lights that size suggests for your island, so you can see the trade-off at a glance: smaller shades, more pendants. Sizes too wide for the island’s depth get a dashed outline.
The count buttons show every option from one pendant up. Green means the spacing works, amber means the row looks sparse and leaves the ends of the island dark, and red means the shades are crowded or too close to the ends. The one marked “Best” is our pick. The result gives you the center-to-center spacing and the exact center of every pendant, measured from the left end of the island. Mark those on the ceiling and your electrician has everything they need.
Last, set how high the shades hang above the counter and pick a shade style. The calculator gives you the height from the floor and the cord or rod length. Save the drawing as an image to bring to the store.
The rules behind the spacing
These are the rules kitchen designers and lighting showrooms quote most often.
24 to 30 inches apart. Space pendants about 24 to 30 inches apart, center to center. Closer and they read as a cluster. Farther and you get dark patches on the counter between them.
Big shades need more room. A 20 inch shade on 24 inch centers leaves only 4 inches of air. The calculator keeps at least half a shade of open space between shades, so very large pendants get wider spacing and, usually, one fewer light.
At least 6 inches in from each end. The outer shades should stop at least 6 inches short of the ends of the island. The suggested layout aims for about 12 inches, so the ends of the counter still get light, then stretches the spacing within the 24 to 30 inch band to fill the island evenly.
30 to 36 inches above the counter. The bottom of each shade should hang 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. Lower and it blocks the view across the kitchen and catches heads. Higher and the bare bulb shines in the eyes of anyone standing at the island.
12 inches narrower than the island is deep. We borrow this from the rule for chandeliers over dining tables. It keeps a shade from overhanging the counter’s edge.
Assumptions
The pendants hang in a single row along the island’s center line, evenly spaced, with the group centered on the island. If your island has a cooktop or a sink that changes where light is needed, use the spacing as a starting point.
Shade heights follow a typical shape for each style: domes are about 60% as tall as they are wide, globes as tall as wide, cones and drums somewhere between. The cord or rod length is measured from the ceiling to the top of the shade, so add a little for the canopy and any slack.
Stools in the drawing are there for scale and sit about 24 inches apart.
Worked example
Say the island is 8 feet long (96 inches) and 42 inches deep, at counter height under a 9 foot ceiling. You like 12 inch dome shades.
- The calculator suggests three pendants. Their centers sit 18, 48 and 78 inches from the left end of the island, 30 inches apart. That leaves 18 inches between shades and 12 inches from each end to the nearest shade.
- Four also fit, just. At 24 inches apart, the outer shades land exactly 6 inches from the ends, the minimum. It works, but it looks busier.
- Bigger shades change the count. With 16 inch shades, three still fit, 28 inches apart. With 20 inch shades the suggestion drops to two.
- Height: hung 32 inches above the counter, the shade bottoms sit 68 inches (5’ 8”) from the floor. A 12 inch dome is about 7 inches tall, so each one needs about 33 inches of cord.

Pendant Light Spacing Calculator FAQ
How far apart should pendant lights be over an island?
Space pendants about 24 to 30 inches apart, center to center, and keep the outer shades at least 6 inches in from the ends of the island. Large shades need more room, so give them at least half a shade of open space between them.
How many pendant lights over an 8 foot island?
Three is the usual answer for shades 8 to 18 inches across. On a 96 inch island, three 12 inch pendants sit 30 inches apart with their centers 18, 48 and 78 inches from one end. With shades of 20 inches or more, two looks better.
How high should pendants hang above a kitchen island?
Hang them so the bottom of each shade is 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. On a standard 36 inch counter that puts the bottoms 66 to 72 inches from the floor. Go toward 36 inches if you are tall or the ceiling is high.
What size pendant lights for a kitchen island?
Most islands take shades 10 to 16 inches across. Keep each shade at least 12 inches narrower than the island is deep, so a 42 inch deep island takes shades up to 30 inches. Bigger shades mean fewer pendants.
Should pendants be centered on the island or the sink?
Center the row on the island itself, with even spacing and equal margins at each end. If a sink or cooktop sits off center, the light still looks right when the row lines up with the countertop.
